Man Charged in Tribal Reservation Assault
A 19-year-old man from Wyoming has been charged with assault after two separate incidents on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
Shawn Antelope Jr., a Northern Arapaho Tribal Member, was indicted on March 21, 2013, with one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm.
The charges stem from an incident on August 1, 2012, and another on December 18, 2012, both on the Wind River Indian Reservation. If convicted, Antelope could face up to 10 years in prison for each count.
Antelope is also facing the possibility of paying restitution, a fine, and special assessment. The indictment is only an accusation and does not necessarily mean he is guilty.
An attorney for Antelope was not immediately available for comment. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming, Christopher A. Crofts, announced the charges.
The Wind River Indian Reservation is home to the Northern Arapaho and the Eastern Shoshone tribes. The reservation is located in central Wyoming.
In every criminal case, the accused is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty, and the government always has the burden of proving guilt at trial beyond a reasonable doubt.
