Montrel Devon Ingram, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, North Carolina 2023

RALEIGH, N.C. — Montrel Devon Ingram, 36, of Rocky Mount, faced federal court on Tuesday for his alleged role in a violent encounter with a Nash County deputy. Ingram is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm following an incident that sparked a fierce pursuit and resulted in a high-speed chase.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Ingram was a passenger during a traffic stop where the driver was suspected of driving under the influence. The situation escalated when Ingram attempted to flee on foot near Ravenwood Drive and Canary Drive in Rocky Mount. A deputy from the Nash County Sheriff’s Office gave chase after noticing Ingram reaching into his waistband.

“We will act swiftly and relentlessly to investigate anyone who threatens our law enforcement officers and violates federal law,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar. The incident, which involved a direct threat to an officer, underscores the importance of swift action by federal and local partners to ensure public safety.

After the deputy heard a gunshot and saw a muzzle flash coming from Ingram’s direction, he sought cover while keeping his eyes on the suspect. Ingram was observed throwing a firearm into the front yard of a nearby residence and attempting to jump a fence into the backyard. The deputy quickly closed in on Ingram and apprehended him with the help of North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers.

The recovered firearm, which had a spent shell casing jammed in the ejector port, contained five additional rounds of ammunition. Ingram now faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison if convicted. The case is a testament to the dedication and support of federal and local law enforcement agencies working together to keep dangerous individuals and illegal firearms off the streets.

Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar announced the charges, which were assisted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Phil Aubart is prosecuting the case.
