Man Guilty of Sex Abuse on Minors
Edwin Johnson, a 61-year-old man from Martin, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl who worked on his farm near Martin between 2010 and 2011.
A U.S. Magistrate Judge, Veronica L. Duffy, accepted Johnson’s guilty plea, but the District Court must still approve the plea. If convicted, Johnson faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The investigation into the crime was conducted by the Martin Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Johnson was released on bond pending the acceptance of his plea and sentencing, which is set for August 2, 2013. A presentence investigation has also been ordered.
The victim’s identity has not been disclosed, and authorities have not released any further information about the case.
While Johnson awaits sentencing, he remains under close supervision, facing severe consequences if he fails to comply with the terms of his bond.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the guilty plea, emphasizing the gravity of the offense and the importance of protecting victims of sex crimes.
