Gardiner Man Indicted for Robbing Maine Pharmacy
A federal grand jury in Portland has indicted Robert Richard, 26, of Gardiner, Maine, on charges of Interference with Commerce by Robbery in connection with the November 28, 2013, robbery of the Rite Aid pharmacy in Bridgton, Maine.
According to court records, Richard was arrested and made his first appearance in federal court yesterday. A detention hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2014.
The robbery, which occurred on Thanksgiving Day, is believed to be one of the most brazen crimes of this nature in the state of Maine in recent years. The Rite Aid pharmacy is a major destination for prescription medication in the area, and the robbery is thought to have had significant financial implications.
Richard faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. An indictment is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bridgton Police Department, with assistance from the Augusta and Gardiner Police Departments, and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
As the investigation into the robbery continues, residents of Bridgton and surrounding areas are left to wonder how such a brazen crime was able to occur. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of local businesses and the community as a whole.
