ROANOKE, Va. – A violent crime shook Danville when Calvin Franklin Hughes, Jr., 38, pled guilty to a chilling Hobbs Act robbery of the Sunrise convenience store. The heist occurred on the night of February 15, 2023.
Hughes, along with co-defendant Arshay Treyvant Haley, 19, both residents of Danville, executed the daring plan with precision. Donning masks, they entered the store where Hughes pointed a pistol at the clerk while Haley brandished a machete. The cash register yielded $750 and cigarette cartons were snatched before the pair fled, Hughes discharging his firearm into the ceiling for good measure.
But their escape was short-lived as surveillance footage, capturing Hughes’ distinctive tattoo on his left hand, helped identify him. A search warrant at his apartment revealed the same pistol, hidden in an HVAC vent and a machete stashed away in a closet, confirmed by ballistic analyses as having been used in the crime.
United States Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh and Special Agent in Charge Craig B. Kailimai of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the announcement of Hughes’ plea. The Danville Police Department and ATF were instrumental in investigating this case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Drew O. Inman and former Special Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Parker Gochenour prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States, ensuring justice for the victims of this brazen robbery.
