Man Pleads Guilty to Oxycodone Fraud
A Beckley man has pleaded guilty to obtaining oxycodone by fraud, according to a recent court hearing. Daniel Michael Koehler, 30, admitted to coxing his girlfriend, a former pharmacy technician at ByPass Pharmacy in Beckley, to steal the prescription painkiller for him.
According to court documents, Koehler and his girlfriend avoided detection by stealing the oxycodone beyond the view of security cameras in the area where the drugs were stored. Koehler admitted to selling some of the oxycodone and using the rest.
The case was investigated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. This case is part of an ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin.
Koehler faces up to four years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release when he is sentenced on December 4, 2014. The United States Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin.
The case highlights the ongoing problem of prescription drug abuse in the region. The Beckley area has seen a significant increase in overdose deaths related to prescription painkillers in recent years.
Koehler’s guilty plea is a significant step in addressing this issue. The United States Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin in the region.
The case is a reminder that prescription drug abuse is a serious problem that requires a multi-faceted approach. The United States Attorney’s Office and law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to prevent the diversion of prescription drugs and to prosecute those who contribute to the problem.
