Assault with a Baseball Bat Lands Norris Man in Prison
A Norris, South Dakota, man was sentenced to 42 months in custody for his role in a violent assault that left two men seriously injured.
Chauncy Crow Dog, 20, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on September 23, 2014, for two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
The assault took place on August 14, 2013, at the Paul Mart Store in Rosebud, where Crow Dog and another person got into a physical confrontation with two victims. Crow Dog then retrieved a baseball bat and struck both men, knocking them to the ground.
Despite his friends telling him to stop, Crow Dog continued to deliver blows to the victims’ backs and heads while they were down.
The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher.
Crow Dog was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence, which also includes 2 years of supervised release, restitution, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The brutal assault has left the community shaken, and the sentencing of Crow Dog serves as a reminder that violent crime will not be tolerated.
The victims of the assault suffered serious injuries, and their identities have not been released to protect their privacy.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
