Man Sentenced for Assaulting Federal Officer

A federal officer was assaulted during a high-speed chase in South Dakota, resulting in the sentencing of a 28-year-old man.

According to authorities, Logan Lafferty, 28, of Mission, South Dakota, refused to stop his vehicle for speeding on March 8, 2014, prompting a pursuit that reached speeds of over 110 miles per hour.

The chase involved several officers from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, who attempted to stop Lafferty’s vehicle. However, Lafferty swerved into the path of one of the officers, obstructing their ability to pass safely.

Lafferty used his vehicle as a dangerous weapon to assault, resist, oppose, and impede the officer, leading to his indictment by a federal grand jury on April 22, 2014.

Lafferty pleaded guilty to the charge on August 28, 2014, and was sentenced to time served, 18 months of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund on November 17, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.

The investigation was conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Maher.

The incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the importance of upholding the law.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson stated that Lafferty’s actions were unacceptable and that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense.
