Grimy Times has learned that a man from Mexico has been sentenced for his role in a massive marijuana distribution scheme. Reyes Chavez-Rojo, a 25-year-old from Mexico, was handed down a 97-month prison sentence by U.S. Chief Judge Jeffery L. Viken on December 2, 2013. This is the latest development in a case that has been unfolding since May 2012, when Chavez-Rojo was indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Chavez-Rojo pled guilty to the charges on August 16, 2013, after being accused of distributing over 100 kilograms of marijuana to Abraham Romero. Romero, who was previously sentenced to 120 months in custody, would then go on to distribute the marijuana further within the District of South Dakota.
According to the indictment, Chavez-Rojo was involved in the conspiracy with more than five participants and was acting as an organizer or leader. This is a significant development, as it suggests that Chavez-Rojo played a key role in the operation.
The investigation into Chavez-Rojo’s activities was a joint effort between several law enforcement agencies, including the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted L. McBride prosecuted the case.
Chavez-Rojo was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after being sentenced. This is a significant blow to the marijuana trafficking operation, and it is likely that more arrests will follow in the coming weeks and months.
The case against Chavez-Rojo serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in South Dakota. As the state continues to grapple with the issue, it is clear that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
