Man Sentenced to 20 Years for 2000 Murder
Alexander Fernandez, a member of a notorious drug trafficking organization, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2000 murder of Edwin Honoret, 28, in Manhattan.
According to the indictment, Fernandez lured Honoret to a secluded location under the George Washington Bridge in the middle of the night on August 13, 2000, and shot him five times, killing him. Fernandez then stole thousands of dollars in drug proceeds that belonged to Honoret.
Fernandez, who was also known as ‘Det,’ ‘D,’ ‘Fat D,’ ‘Gordo,’ pleaded guilty to the crime on March 2, 2018, before U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman. The judge imposed the 20-year sentence, along with three years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman praised the investigative work of the Cold Case Homicide Squad of the New York City Police Department, saying, ‘Thanks to the remarkable efforts of the NYPD, Fernandez has finally been held accountable for his terrible crime.’
Berman also thanked the Special Agents of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York for their work on the case. The case is being prosecuted by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Anden Chow, Thomas McKay, and Laurie A. Korenbaum in charge of the prosecution.
The case highlights the dangers of the street-level drug trade and the devastating consequences of violence in the pursuit of profits. Fernandez’s sentence brings a measure of justice to the family and loved ones of Edwin Honoret, who was killed in a senseless act of violence.
