Shreveport, La. – Marcell Deangelo Lewis, 24, made headlines when he appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark L. Hornsby on Monday, pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms.
The grim tale began on March 19, 2018, when a Shreveport Police officer pulled Lewis over for speeding on Interstate 49 near Hollywood street. The traffic stop turned dangerous as the officer smelled marijuana and discovered a loaded Colt revolver and a Glock pistol within reach of Lewis.
Lewis had already been convicted in Caddo Parish District Court for possession with intent to distribute marijuana, a charge that under federal law bars him from owning or possessing firearms. Now, he faces up to 10 years behind bars, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The ATF and Shreveport Police Department conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown leading the prosecution. Sentencing for Lewis is scheduled for September 12, 2019.
