Mark Day, Heroin Trafficking and Firearms Offenses, Illinois 2015
A St. Louis man has been sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison for his role in a heroin trafficking ring that operated in Washington Park, Illinois.
Mark Day, 31, of St. Louis, Missouri, will serve 138 months in federal prison for possession with intent to deliver heroin and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, announced United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Donald S. Boyce.
Day will also be on federal supervised release for 4 years following his prison sentence. He has been in custody since January 4, 2017.
According to documents filed in the U.S. District Court, on February 26, 2015, Day and a juvenile accomplice were observed making hand-to-hand drug deliveries in Washington Park, Illinois. When officers attempted to stop the car driven by the juvenile accomplice, he fled at a high rate of speed and eventually crashed the car into a ditch.
Day and the juvenile were arrested, and officers found 2,626 capsules of heroin and three loaded firearms on their persons and in the car. The firearms included a Century Arms AK-47 rifle, a Taurus 9 mm semiautomatic handgun that had been stolen, and a Taurus .45 caliber handgun.
The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (MEGSI). Assistant United States Attorney Ali Summers prosecuted the case.
Day’s sentence is a reminder of the serious consequences of engaging in heroin trafficking and firearms offenses. Heroin is a highly addictive and deadly drug that has devastated communities across the country.
