Tampa, Florida – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Marrell Dion Speights, a 32-year-old student education assistant from St. Petersburg, has been charged with receipt, transportation, and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The indictment, obtained by Grimy Times, reveals a shocking truth about the nature of the crime.
According to the indictment and criminal complaint, Speights transported, received, and possessed visual depictions of children under the age of 12 being sexually abused. This heinous crime was uncovered on June 19, 2025, when Speights attempted to enter the United States at the Tampa International Airport from a Canadian flight that was returning from a trip to Japan. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents stopped Speights and reviewed his cellphone, discovering images of CSAM in the hidden photos feature.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty. This distinction is crucial in the American justice system, where the burden of proof rests with the prosecution.
The investigation into Speights’ activities was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection – Tampa. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Erin Claire Favorit. This prosecution is part of a larger effort to combat child sex abuse and exploitation, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
