Roanoke, VIRGINIA – A disturbing trend of repeat offenders continues to plague our nation’s borders. The latest example is Martin Alvarez-Torres, a 38-year-old Mexican citizen who has been removed from the United States an astonishing six times in recent years.
According to court documents, Alvarez-Torres, a citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after being previously deported without the express consent of the Attorney General of the United States and the Secretary of Homeland Security to apply for admission into the United States.
Alvarez-Torres’ troubles with the law began in 2014, when he was indicted for his sixth removal from the country. The defendant remained at-large until his arrest in Roanoke, Virginia in June 2016. This is a clear example of the need for stricter immigration laws and better enforcement.
The investigation into Alvarez-Torres’ case was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant United States Attorney C. Patrick Hogeboom III and Special Assistant United States Attorney Kari Munro prosecuted the case for the United States.
Alvarez-Torres’ sentence is a significant blow to those who would seek to exploit our immigration system. It serves as a reminder that those who break our laws will be held accountable.
The case against Alvarez-Torres is a stark reminder of the need for our elected officials to take a stronger stance on immigration reform. We must protect our nation’s borders and ensure that those who seek to enter our country do so legally and with our approval.
In a statement, Acting United States Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle said, ‘The sentence imposed in this case reflects the seriousness with which we take the issue of immigration enforcement.’ We agree, and we will continue to shine a light on the stories of those who break our laws and threaten our national security.
