MASSILLON, OHIO – Nathan Benedum II, a 53-year-old resident of Massillon, has been formally indicted on one count of enticement, according to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) for the Southern District of Ohio.
The charges stem from an incident in April 2019 where Benedum is alleged to have attempted to persuade a then-13-year-old girl into engaging in illegal sexual activity. The indictment asserts that Benedum knowingly sought to induce the minor, under the false belief that she was younger than her actual age.
In light of the charges, if convicted, Benedum’s sentence will be decided by the Court based on various factors specific to his case, including any prior criminal history and the nature of the offense. Despite these considerations, the sentencing will not exceed the statutory maximum set forth by law, and it is generally expected to fall below that threshold.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Sullivan is leading the prosecution in this case, which has been investigated by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Canton Police Department.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not constitute proof of guilt. Benedum will have the right to a fair trial where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This disturbing case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by predators who seek to exploit minors. The swift action taken by federal authorities in this instance demonstrates the commitment to protecting our youth from such predators.
