Rapid City, South Dakota, June 17, 2024 – In a harsh blow to those who prey on the innocent, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier has sentenced Matthew Bowman, a 35-year-old New Underwood man, to five years and ten months in federal prison for receiving child pornography.
Bowman was convicted of Receipt of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography by a federal grand jury in November of 2023. His guilty plea came on January 24, 2024.
The disturbing case stems from Bowman’s reception of child pornography between September of 2020 and July of 2022. Investigators uncovered images depicting child sex abuse, with some of the images showing children as young as four to six years old. A cybertip from Google Drive and Google Photos led authorities to Bowman’s child pornography collection.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Bowman’s sentence includes five years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He will also be required to register as a sex offender under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
This case was investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case.
Bowman was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for those who engage in child exploitation.
