ALBUQUERQUE — Convicted felon Maurice Lacey, 66, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for shooting a woman at an Albuquerque Walmart in 2022.
Lacey, a convicted felon and domestic violence offender, was prohibited from possessing firearms at the time of the crime. On October 21, 2022, he followed the victim, Jane Doe, to the employee breakroom and shot her in the back of the head.
The victim, who was prohibited from being shot, suffered severe injuries, including a compressed skull fracture requiring emergency surgery and extensive rehabilitation. She continues to experience physical impairments and trauma from the shooting.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and Brendan Iber, Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, announced the sentence. ‘This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the dangers of firearms in the wrong hands,’ Uballez said.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Trembley and Patrick E. Cordova are prosecuting the case.
Upon his release from prison, Lacey will be subject to 3 years of supervised release. The no-parole federal prison sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the dangers of firearms in the wrong hands.
The case highlights the importance of enforcing domestic violence restraining orders and the need for convicted felons to be held accountable for their actions.
