ALBANY, NEW YORK – Jesse Bedell, the 36-year-old resident of Mayfield, New York, was today sentenced to serve a 33-month prison term after being convicted of transmitting threats to cause injury. United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Matthew Scarpino, Special Agent in Charge of the Buffalo Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), issued the stern announcement.
In February 2024, a two-day jury trial led to Bedell’s conviction. The evidence presented revealed that Bedell applied for a job at Medline Industries’ NAMIC Division in Glens Falls and was offered employment contingent upon passing a background check. However, Bedell failed to disclose a prior criminal conviction, which led to the withdrawal of his employment offer on January 9, 2020.
The following day, Bedell made threats against Medline employees in Neptune, New Jersey, and Northfield, Illinois. He vowed to burn down and blow up the Glens Falls plant and threatened to kill an employee in Illinois. United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino also imposed a 3-year term of supervised release, which will commence upon Bedell’s release from prison.
This harrowing case was investigated by the Glens Falls Police Department and HSI, with assistance from the Warren County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer led the prosecution against Bedell.
Bedell’s actions have sent a chilling reminder of the potential dangers posed by individuals who use cyber threats to harm others. His sentence sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in our society.
