Jessie Mayfield, Fentanyl and Firearm Possession, New Jersey 2021

A Passaic County man’s attempt to peddle fentanyl on the streets of Paterson backfired spectacularly, with the 61-year-old sentenced to 125 months in the slammer for his crimes.

Jessie Mayfield, a 61-year-old resident of Paterson, New Jersey, was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin in Newark federal court after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

According to court documents, on August 24, 2021, Mayfield was caught with a stash of fentanyl packaged for distribution, along with a Ruger .22 caliber pistol and 95 .22 caliber long rifle cartridges. The evidence suggests that Mayfield planned to sell the fentanyl, putting countless lives at risk.

The sentencing comes as a result of an investigation led by the New Jersey State Parole Board, Paterson Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger commended the efforts of the agencies involved in bringing Mayfield to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dong Joo Lee represented the government in the case, which highlights the ongoing battle against fentanyl trafficking in New Jersey. The harsh sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of getting caught in the world of illicit substances.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Padin also sentenced Mayfield to three years of supervised release. This latest development serves as a warning to those involved in the fentanyl trade: the law will catch up to you, and the punishment will be severe.
