Norkeithus Malik Reed, Gun Possession, Mississippi 2024

Jackson, MS – In a gritty ruling from the Southern District of Mississippi, Norkeithus Malik Reed, 24, of McComb, was today sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

\\

Reed’s transgression came to light when the Brookhaven Police Department responded to a disturbance complaint at a local restaurant. On scene, officers discovered Reed in possession of a firearm, a clear violation of federal law which prohibits individuals with felony convictions from owning or possessing firearms.

\\

According to court documents, Reed had previously been convicted in state court for drug-related felony charges. The 24-year-old was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 4, 2023, and entered a guilty plea on January 30, 2024, to the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

\\

U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee of the Southern District of Mississippi announced the sentence, alongside Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The ATF, under its Special Agent in Charge Jackson, led the investigation into this case.

\\

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen prosecuted Reed for this violation. This conviction is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement with communities. The initiative, which was bolstered on May 26, 2021, focuses on fostering trust in communities, supporting preventive measures, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.

\\

This case underscores the commitment of local and federal agencies to keep neighborhoods safe from gun violence and ensure justice for those who break the law. Reed’s sentence sends a clear message that illegal firearm possession will not be tolerated.
