FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. — Floyd County dentist Denver D. Tackett, 66, of McDowell, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for health care fraud, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Tackett, who owns and operates Tackett Family Dentistry, is accused of submitting false and unnecessary claims to Kentucky Medicaid. The dentist admitted to billing for procedures that were not needed or appropriate for patient treatment.
Authorities say Tackett claimed more than $95,000 in reimbursements for medically unnecessary dental procedures. He also agreed to surrender his DEA registration and pay at least $70,000 in restitution.
The guilty plea is part of the Appalachian Regional Prescription Opioid (ARPO) Strike Force initiative, which targets prescription drug abuse and related crimes in the region.
United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky Robert M. Duncan, Jr., DEA Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey T. Scott, and Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron jointly announced the plea agreement.
Tackett faces up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 at his December 15 sentencing hearing.
