McKinney Man Faces 10 Years for Trying to Meet 14-Year-Old Girl for Sex
DALLAS, Texas – Rodney Allen Thompson, 44, of McKinney, Texas, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for attempting to meet a 14-year-old girl at a local mall for sex.
Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of transferring obscene material to a minor, a federal offense that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a lifetime of supervised release.
According to court documents, Thompson began communicating with ‘Jane Doe,’ a 14-year-old girl he believed to be, via Yahoo! Messenger in December 2012. However, Jane Doe was actually an undercover officer with the Garland Police Department.
Thompson admitted to communicating with Jane Doe in a sexually explicit manner, indicating his desire to engage in sexual activity with her. He also sent an obscene video of himself via webcam and convinced Jane Doe to meet him at a mall in Garland, where he was subsequently arrested on December 13, 2012.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The investigation was conducted by the Garland Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Camille Sparks leading the prosecution. U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldaña of the Northern District of Texas announced the guilty plea.
Thompson has been in custody since his arrest and will face a sentencing date in the near future. The Garland Police Department’s efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse are a testament to the importance of this vital initiative.
