WARREN, OH – Ricardo B. McKinney, 31, is staring down a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty on multiple counts related to a significant heroin trafficking operation and illegal firearm possession. The conviction, announced jointly by Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja for the Northern District of Ohio and Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel, marks a victory in a city long plagued by the opioid crisis.
The jury convicted McKinney on two counts of distribution of heroin, one count of possession with the intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin, and one count of being a felon in possession of firearms following a week-long trial. Evidence presented detailed McKinney’s drug dealing activities, dating back to early 2015. He peddled heroin on at least two separate occasions before his February 25, 2015, arrest.
When Warren police raided McKinney’s location, they seized a staggering 1657.2 grams – over 3.6 pounds – of heroin, along with two handguns. Crucially, court documents and trial testimony established that McKinney was already a convicted felon, making possession of the firearms a separate and serious offense. Sierleja didn’t mince words: “This is a criminal who does not belong on the streets of Warren or anywhere else,” he stated. “The amount of deadly drugs he had, and the fact that he’s a felon with firearms, demonstrates that prison is the proper place for this defendant.”
Chief Merkel echoed the sentiment, praising the collaborative effort that brought McKinney down. “I would like to thank the Warren Street Crimes Unit for all of the hard work that was put into this case and their dedication to removing from our streets a drug that has killed so many in our city,” Merkel said. He also acknowledged the crucial role of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in securing the conviction. “This partnership is an essential element in our mission to eliminate drug traffickers from our community.”
Federal prosecutors aren’t just seeking a lengthy prison sentence. They’ve also moved to forfeit nearly $30,000 in cash and the two firearms seized during the investigation – assets directly linked to McKinney’s criminal enterprise. The forfeiture aims to dismantle the financial infrastructure that fueled his operation and prevent him from profiting from his crimes even behind bars.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marisa T. Darden and Daniel J. Riedl spearheaded the prosecution, building a solid case based on evidence gathered by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Warren Police Department. McKinney is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19. With a mandatory minimum of 10 years looming, and the potential for a significantly longer sentence, this case serves as a stark warning to those involved in the deadly heroin trade in Northern Ohio.
