McLaughlin Man Gets 10 Years for Attempted Murder

A McLaughlin, South Dakota, man was sentenced to 121 months in prison for assault with intent to commit murder, according to a recent court hearing.

Ross Dean Farrell, 21, was found guilty of the crime after a federal grand jury indicted him on October 16, 2012. He pleaded guilty on May 28, 2013.

The incident that led to the charges occurred on October 8, 2012, when Farrell was socializing with the victim and others at his home. The victim fell asleep on a mattress on the floor, but Farrell, who was outraged by a perceived slight, pulled the victim off the mattress and repeatedly stomped on the victim’s head and face with his feet.

The victim suffered major injuries, including severe head trauma, which required emergency surgeries and a medically induced coma.

Farrell was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on September 9, 2013. In addition to the 121-month prison sentence, he was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case. Farrell was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately after the sentencing.

Farrell’s actions on that fateful night demonstrate a disturbing disregard for human life, and it’s only right that he faces the consequences of his actions. The sentence handed down by Judge Kornmann will keep Farrell off the streets for an extended period, and we hope it brings some measure of justice to the victim and their loved ones.
