FRANKFORT, KY – Melissa Wilhoite, 40, of Versailles, Kentucky, will spend the next 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to poisoning two fellow inmates with fentanyl while locked up in the Woodford County Detention Center. U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove handed down the 180-month sentence Wednesday.
The case unfolded after jail staff responded to a double overdose on November 22, 2024. Investigators quickly traced the source to Wilhoite, who’d smuggled the deadly opioid into the facility just after her own arrest on November 21st. She then distributed the fentanyl to two cellmates, leaving both fighting for their lives. Both victims lost consciousness and required emergency hospital treatment.
Wilhoite admitted to the distribution, sealing her fate. Under federal sentencing guidelines, she’ll serve at least 85% of her sentence before being released to three years of supervised probation.
The investigation was a joint effort by the DEA Louisville Field Division and the Versailles Police Department. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul McCaffrey and DEA Special Agent in Charge Jim Scott announced the sentencing, a stark reminder of the fentanyl crisis spreading even within the walls of correctional facilities.
