McALLEN, Texas – Gabriel Eduardo Sanchez, 21, of Mercedes, Texas, has admitted to a sickening crime: possessing and receiving child pornography. The guilty plea, entered today, brings a step closer to accountability for a digital predator who preyed on the most vulnerable. Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez announced the conviction, a grim reminder of the dark underbelly of the internet.
The case against Sanchez unraveled from an investigation initiated back on September 17, 2015, in another state. That probe led to the arrest of an individual sending child pornography electronically. Investigators quickly discovered that this individual had shared the horrific material with Sanchez via the Kik messenger app – a popular platform for exchanging images and videos, now stained by this abuse.
On September 14, 2016, FBI agents raided Sanchez’s Mercedes residence, armed with a federal search warrant. The search yielded a horrifying cache of digital depravity. Agents seized multiple electronic devices and storage media, which, upon forensic examination, revealed over 2,000 videos and more than 1,000 images depicting child pornography. The content wasn’t merely exploitative; it included depictions of children under the age of 12 engaged in sadistic acts, bondage, and other forms of violent abuse.
During his guilty plea, Sanchez confessed to downloading, receiving, and sharing this vile content on both Kik Messenger and WhatsApp. He also admitted to saving the images across multiple storage devices, indicating a deliberate and ongoing pattern of abuse. This wasn’t a one-time error; it was a conscious choice to engage with and propagate child exploitation.
U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa accepted the guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for June 14, 2017. Sanchez now faces a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison. He also risks a hefty $250,000 fine. He will remain in custody awaiting that hearing – a small comfort, given the irreparable harm inflicted on the victims depicted in the images.
The FBI spearheaded the investigation, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex Benavides. This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute predators while rescuing victims. Resources and internet safety information are available at www.usdoj.gov/psc.
