A 45-year-old man from Merrimac, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to have sex with a minor.
Zachary C. Wood made arrangements to travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to meet with a 14-year-old child, but was arrested upon arrival on October 12, 2020.
Unbeknownst to Wood, he had been communicating with a member of law enforcement under the guise that he was planning to meet with the minor, and had also distributed digital videos of explicit child pornography depicting infants and toddlers being abused.
The case was part of Operation Kick Boxer, a collaborative effort involving the Milwaukee Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
Wood’s indictment and subsequent conviction were part of a larger effort to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, and he will also have to register as a sexual offender upon his release from prison.
Following his release, Wood will spend five years on supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Green Bay and Milwaukee offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
