NEW ORLEANS, LA – Mervin Amacker Jr., 41, is facing a potentially life-altering sentence after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of kidnapping and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment, handed down May 5, 2023, alleges a brazen disregard for the law that could land Amacker behind bars for decades.

According to the Department of Justice, Amacker is charged with kidnapping in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1201(a). A conviction on this count carries a maximum term of life imprisonment, alongside a hefty fine of up to $250,000, five years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment fee. The details of the kidnapping remain tightly guarded as the case progresses, but the severity of the charge speaks volumes about the alleged crime.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, Amacker is also accused of violating 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1) – possession of a firearm by a felon. Given his prior criminal history, authorities allege he was illegally in possession of a weapon. If found guilty on this charge, he faces a maximum of 15 years in prison, another potential $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and the additional $100 assessment.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans was quick to emphasize that the indictment is not a finding of guilt. “The indictment is merely a charge,” Evans stated, “and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” The wheels of justice are now turning, and Amacker will have the opportunity to defend himself against these serious allegations.

This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on fostering trust, supporting community organizations, prioritizing enforcement, and measuring results – a clear signal of the federal government’s commitment to tackling violent crime.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department.
