Cedar Rapids, IA – A jury in federal court has delivered a verdict of guilty against Gordon Lasley, Jr., 26, for the heinous murders of his parents on the Meskwaki Nation Settlement. Lasley was sentenced to two counts of second-degree murder after an eight-day trial that concluded with a single day of deliberation.
The case, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, revolves around the tragic events of February 5, 2014, when Lasley allegedly wielded a machete to kill his father, Gordon Lasley, Sr., and mother, Kim Renee Lasley. The defense argued that Lasley was insane at the time of the murders, but this claim failed to sway the jury.
Lasley remains in custody pending sentencing before Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. If sentenced to the maximum penalty, he could face life imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, $200 in special assessments, and up to ten years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The investigation into the murders was a joint effort by several law enforcement agencies, including the Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police Department, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys CJ Williams and Anthony Morfitt prosecuted the case.
