ALBANY, GA – Another piece of a brazen, open-air drug market has fallen. Eddie Houston, 43, of McDonough, Georgia, admitted to possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine, bringing a close to a sprawling, multi-agency investigation that exposed a high-volume drug pipeline poisoning Southwest Georgia and beyond. Houston faces a mandatory minimum of ten years, but the potential stretches to a lifetime behind bars, followed by at least five years of supervised release and a staggering maximum fine of $10,000,000. Sentencing is scheduled for an unspecified date.
U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary didn’t mince words: “This conviction ends a lengthy multi-agency investigation which successfully ended a brazen and dangerous stop and shop selling high volumes of the deadliest drugs out in the open.” He vowed the U.S. Attorney’s Office will relentlessly pursue and punish those responsible for flooding communities with illicit substances. The message is clear: dealing death carries severe consequences.
The bust wasn’t a solo act. FBI Special Agent in Charge Chris Macrae highlighted the collaborative effort, stating, “This case demonstrates the commitment of the FBI and our partners to end an epidemic in our society that is killing our citizens.” Macrae underscored the gravity of the crime, emphasizing that Houston’s potential life sentence serves as a stark warning to anyone considering a similar path. “We will find and prosecute you.”
Court documents reveal a network orchestrated by convicted co-defendants Sherrod Winchester and James Malone, both of Albany. Since May 2018, the pair allegedly sourced and distributed massive quantities of controlled substances across Albany, Georgia, and even into Panama City, Florida. Houston and Shannon Mason, 41, of Leesburg, Georgia, were caught in February 2020, exchanging drugs in a Stone Mountain, Georgia, parking lot. A search revealed a hefty haul: 1,106 grams of cocaine and 990 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride. Mason acted as a courier for Winchester and Malone.
Winchester is already facing 300 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute controlled substances. Malone received a 240-month sentence for distribution of methamphetamine, and Mason will serve 75 months for her role in the scheme. Robert J. Murphy, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Field Division, stated the guilty pleas are “a direct result of the dedicated efforts of the DEA and its law enforcement partners.” He added, “The distribution of methamphetamine continues to ravage many communities across the country. Southwest Georgia and elsewhere are much safer because these drug traffickers have been removed from the streets.”
GBI Director Vic Reynolds affirmed that drug trafficking “at any level will not be tolerated in the state of Georgia,” and Albany Police Chief Michael Persley vowed continued commitment from local, state, and federal agencies. “We will continue to use all resources available to remove those persons and groups intent on enabling the drug culture to exist and flourish within our community,” Persley said.
