Paducah, KY – A devastating blow has been dealt to a local methamphetamine trade, as a 34-year-old Madisonville man has been slapped with federal charges for distributing the deadly substance.

Travarius Baxter, 34, has been hit with two felony counts, including distributing methamphetamine on February 17, 2022, and possessing the same substance with the intent to distribute it on March 9, 2022, according to court records. The charges stem from a thorough investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Madisonville-Hopkins County VICE/Narcotics Unit.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Leigh Ann Dycus, who will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served. U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky made the announcement, shedding light on the severity of the situation.

“If convicted at trial, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of at least 10 years, and up to life, in federal prison,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office warned. “There is no parole in the federal system.” A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The indictment is mere allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Baxter was arraigned on May 16, 2022, before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.
