Gulfport, Miss. – A Jackson County man, James Richard Morgan, 42, is heading to federal prison for his role in the local methamphetamine trade.
U.S. District Court in Gulfport sentenced Morgan to 105 months (over 8.75 years) for possession with intent to distribute 70 grams of 42% pure methamphetamine.
The case unfolded on September 11, 2018, when Morgan and co-defendant Karlos Brown sold the illicit substance in the parking lot of a Pascagoula Walmart. The duo’s actions caught the attention of law enforcement, leading to a federal indictment on May 17, 2022.
Morgan and Brown initially faced charges for their alleged involvement in the methamphetamine trade. However, the pair later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Brown, Morgan’s co-defendant, received a 70-month prison sentence on February 27, 2023. U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee and Special Agent in Charge Robert Eikhoff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation made the announcement regarding Morgan’s sentencing.
The case was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pascagoula Police Department, and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erica Rose led the prosecution effort.
The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which targets high-level drug traffickers, money launderers, and transnational criminal organizations. OCDETF utilizes a multi-agency approach, combining the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to dismantle these criminal networks.
As Morgan begins his lengthy prison sentence, the question remains: how many more individuals will be caught in the web of the local methamphetamine trade?
