Jeru-Ahmad Jibad Shakur, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Florida 2024

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA – Jeru-Ahmad Jibad Shakur, 49, of Hampton, Georgia, is headed for a long stretch behind bars. The career criminal was sentenced to 210 months – that’s 17 and a half years – in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute the same. The sentence was handed down by the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, Jason R. Coody.

This wasn’t a small-time operation. Evidence presented in court painted a picture of Shakur as a key player in a methamphetamine pipeline flooding the Northern District of Florida and beyond. He wasn’t dealing nickel bags; we’re talking about pound quantities of high-purity meth. The feds say Shakur supplied a co-conspirator with three pounds of the stuff, and personally peddled another four pounds directly to an undercover agent. That’s a serious volume for a man clearly prioritizing profit over public safety.

“Methamphetamine distribution is a scourge on large and small communities of our district,” Coody stated bluntly. “With our dedicated law enforcement partners, we are committed to identifying and aggressively prosecuting those who threaten our citizens’ health and safety by distributing such addictive, controlled substances.” It’s a standard line from a prosecutor, but in this case, the numbers back it up. The investigation, a coordinated effort between multiple agencies, ultimately led to the seizure of approximately seven pounds of methamphetamine and the convictions of two of Shakur’s accomplices.

Deanne L. Reuter, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Miami Field Division, didn’t mince words either. “Methamphetamine is a highly-addictive substance that destroys families and communities,” she said. “Our DEA agents will continue to work with law enforcement partners to stop those who traffic this illicit and dangerous drug.” The DEA’s involvement underscores the seriousness of the case and the agency’s commitment to dismantling these drug networks.

Shakur’s sentence isn’t just about locking him up for the next decade and a half. After his prison term, he’ll be subject to five years of supervised release – a period where he’ll be monitored to ensure he stays clean and doesn’t slip back into his old habits. Whether that will be enough to rehabilitate a seasoned drug trafficker remains to be seen. The investigation was a joint effort involving the DEA, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Suwanee County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Perry Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Byron handled the prosecution.
