Meth Smuggler Sentenced to 70 Months

A 53-year-old U.S. citizen, living in Tamaulipas, Mexico, has been ordered to federal prison for importing meth into the United States. Fernando Ramirez pleaded guilty to the charges on February 26.

On December 11, 2020, Ramirez arrived at the Hidalgo port of entry and attempted to enter the United States from Mexico. He claimed he was on his way to work from his home in Tamaulipas. However, a K-9 alerted to the gasoline tank of his vehicle during a secondary inspection, leading to the seizure of 44 packages of meth with a weight of approximately 23 kilograms.

The seized meth had an estimated street value of $126,500. Ramirez eventually admitted that he knew the vehicle he was driving contained drugs and that he would be paid $500 to smuggle them into the United States. This was not the first time Ramirez had attempted to import controlled substances into the country. He admitted to crossing loaded vehicles several times in the past.

In sentencing Ramirez, U.S. District Judge Randy Crane noted the seriousness of the crime. Ramirez’s actions pose a significant threat to public safety and the community. The judge’s decision aims to hold him accountable for his actions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Colton Turner prosecuted the case. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation. The court ordered Ramirez to serve a 70-month sentence, followed by four years of supervised release.
