ST. LOUIS – Davie John Metzger, 55, of O’Fallon, Missouri, will spend the next six and a half years in federal prison after being sentenced Thursday for possessing horrific child sexual abuse material. U.S. District Judge John A. Ross handed down the 78-month sentence, a punishment for a digital depravity that spanned multiple devices and a cloud account.
The sentence isn’t just about incarceration. Judge Ross ordered Metzger to pay a staggering $24,000 in restitution to the identified victims depicted in the sickening material he hoarded. An additional $40,000 will be distributed to other child pornography victims and vital victim services, a small attempt to mitigate the damage caused by Metzger’s actions.
Federal investigators uncovered a disturbing cache of abuse imagery during their investigation. Metzger possessed 369 images on a flash drive, 24 on a hard drive, 211 within an online cloud storage account, and another 343 on his cell phone – a total digital collection of exploitation. The sheer volume of material triggered three separate CyberTipline reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, alerting authorities to his depravity.
But the depravity didn’t end with downloaded images. A court-approved search of Metzger’s online activity revealed a chilling pattern: he’d been surreptitiously photographing women and girls in public places, adding another layer of predatory behavior to his crimes. This wasn’t simply possession; it was active, disturbing behavior.
Metzger pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in April to one count of receipt of child pornography, a charge that carries a substantial penalty. The FBI and the St. Charles County Cybercrime Task Force worked tirelessly on the investigation, building a case that ultimately led to Metzger’s conviction and sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring accountability for these heinous acts.
This case was pursued under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. The project focuses on combating the ever-growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, coordinating federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders like Metzger, and to rescue the vulnerable victims.
