A 60-year-old Saint Bernard man is behind bars after being sentenced to 69 months in prison for his role in a large-scale fentanyl, cocaine, oxycodolone and marijuana distribution ring, federal authorities announced.

Robert C. Metzler, 60, was sentenced on April 23, 2024, in connection with a two-count indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute carisoprodol and possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and a quantity of cocaine, oxycodone and marijuana, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(B), 841(b)(1)(C), and 846 respectively.

According to court documents, Metzler conspired to receive shipments of carisoprodol from outside of the United States with the intent to distribute, and possess with the intent to distribute, these controlled substances within the Eastern District of Louisiana. Following the execution of a search warrant for Metzler’s home, agents recovered multiple controlled substances and documents associated with drug transactions.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Hammond Police Department, and the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman of the Narcotics Unit.

Metzler was sentenced on each count to 69 months imprisonment, four years of supervised release, and a $200 mandatory special assessment fee. All sentences are to run concurrently with each other.

The sentencing is a major victory for law enforcement and the community, said authorities. Metzler’s conviction serves as a reminder that those who engage in large-scale drug trafficking will be held accountable for their actions.
