A Mexican drug trafficker has been found guilty by a federal jury in Iowa for leading a methamphetamine distribution ring that operated across the Waterloo area. Luis Carlos Corral Lopez, 31, from Caborca, Sonora, Mexico, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance after a three-day trial.

The evidence at trial revealed that Corral Lopez was dispatched by a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization in late 2020 to oversee the distribution of methamphetamine in Waterloo. Upon his arrival, he procured approximately twenty-two pounds of the drug and distributed it to street-level distributors.

Between January 2020 and January 2022, law enforcement seized nearly two hundred pounds of methamphetamine and twenty-three pounds of fentanyl from the organization linked to Corral Lopez.

The sentencing hearing before United States District Judge C.J. Williams is set to occur after a presentence report is prepared. Corral Lopez remains in custody pending sentencing, facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, along with a $10 million fine and lifetime supervised release.

Assistant United States Attorneys Dillan Edwards and Ashley Corkery prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and various other federal agencies as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force program.
