Mexican Man Sentenced for Importing $2.4M Worth of Meth
A Mexican national was sentenced to federal prison for 20 years after being convicted of arranging the importation of 148 kilograms of methamphetamine into the United States, officials announced.
Hermenegildo Espino-Trejo, 41, pleaded guilty to the charges on December 2, 2020. On March 27, U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez ordered Espino-Trejo to serve a 240-month sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, the court heard additional information about Espino-Trejo’s role in the conspiracy, including how he recruited an unwitting truck driver to import a multi-million dollar load of narcotics into the U.S.
The investigation revealed that Espino-Trejo drove a tractor-trailer from Michoacan to Reynosa, Mexico, where he gave the vehicle to another driver and instructed him to cross the border and deliver it to a gas station in Pharr, Texas. Espino-Trejo planned to re-take possession of the vehicle and further distribute the narcotics.
However, at the Pharr point of entry, law enforcement discovered 148 kilograms of meth and one kilogram of heroin concealed within the trailer. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics was approximately $2.4 million.
Espino-Trejo admitted to arranging the transportation of the controlled substances and planning to distribute them further. He has been and will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Redavid and Scott Greenbaum prosecuted the case, while Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation.
Deputy Special Agent in Charge Timothy Tubbs of Homeland Security Investigations praised the cooperation of federal partners in the arrest and prosecution of Espino-Trejo, saying, ‘As drug dealers prey on communities, they often ignore the laws of this nation. It’s great to have the cooperation of our federal partners to aid in the arrest and prosecution of these drug traffickers.’
