Tanisha Adderley, Wire Fraud, Texas 2023

MANSFIELD, TX – A seemingly trusted employee turned thief, systematically pilfering $3.7 million from a health and human services technology solutions company over five years. Tanisha Adderley, 51, of Mansfield, pleaded guilty today to wire fraud, a betrayal of confidence that has landed her in federal court and facing a potential two-decade prison sentence.

The scheme, uncovered by the U.S. Secret Service Dallas Field Office, ran from 2019 to 2023. Adderley, responsible for processing fee refunds, exploited her access to the company’s funds recovery bank account. Instead of legitimately returning money to clients, she fabricated approvals and funneled the funds into bank accounts she personally controlled.

“No company should face the scenario that this one did, in which a trusted employee steals millions of dollars from its accounts,” stated U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Leigha Simonton. The Justice Department is sending a clear message: breaches of trust, especially those involving significant financial loss, will not be tolerated.

According to court documents, Adderley’s method was simple but effective. She created false documentation to authorize wire payments, diverting the funds to her own undisclosed accounts. The consistent, years-long operation speaks to a calculated and deliberate effort to defraud the company. Christina Foley, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service’s Dallas Field Office, emphasized the agency’s dedication to protecting the financial system. “The Secret Service has a long tradition of investigating those who aim to exploit our financial systems,” Foley said.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Secret Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, ultimately unraveled Adderley’s deception. She was charged via criminal information in September and entered her guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Irma Carrillo Ramirez. The $3.7 million represents a substantial loss for the victim company, and the prosecution intends to seek a harsh penalty.

Adderley now awaits sentencing, scheduled for May 6, 2024. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in federal prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nashonme Johnson is leading the prosecution, ensuring Adderley is held accountable for her calculated and costly crime. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of internal fraud and the importance of robust financial controls.
