Omaha, NE – In a gritty blow to the meth trade, Hugo Martha-Mejia, a 45-year-old Mexican national, was sentenced on February 3, 2023, for his role in distributing pure methamphetamine. The United States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Martha-Mejia faced a tough 78-month sentence handed down by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr., which meant no parole in the federal system. After serving his time, Martha-Mejia will be under supervised release for an additional five years.
Martha-Mejia’s descent into the criminal underworld began on February 11, 2020, when a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confidential source met him at a BP gas station on Omaha’s 24th and Martha streets. The deal was audio and video recorded, monitored by agents as they swapped one pound of meth for cash. Martha-Mejia was arrested soon after and indicted by a federal grand jury.
Forensic analysis revealed that the seized meth had an alarmingly high purity of 94%, a fact not lost on the judge who sentenced Martha-Mejia to serve his time in the Bureau of Prisons. The DEA, which investigated the case, has once again shown its determination to combat drug trafficking.
The street-level exchange was just one of many operations the DEA has conducted to dismantle drug rings and bring traffickers to justice. With Martha-Mejia’s conviction, federal authorities have sent a clear message that methamphetamine distribution will not be tolerated in Nebraska or any other jurisdiction under the United States.
Martha-Mejia’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in the illegal drug trade. The community of Omaha and law enforcement agencies across the country should take comfort in the fact that justice has been served, and Martha-Mejia will spend years behind bars for his crimes.
