Mexican National Sentenced for Methamphetamine Trafficking

Manuel Ivan Reina-Ruiz, a 40-year-old Sonora, Mexico resident, has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in importing methamphetamine into the United States from Mexico.

Reina-Ruiz was arrested in January 2016 and has been held without bond ever since. The Mexican national will remain in custody until he is transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined.

According to the investigation, Reina-Ruiz was driving a vehicle from Mexico into the United States through the Progreso port of entry on January 16, 2016, when Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered methamphetamine hidden within the quarter panels and all four tires of the vehicle.

Agents seized numerous bricks of the drug weighing approximately 62 kilograms, a significant methamphetamine shipment.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced the sentence, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for their roles in the importation of narcotics into the United States.

The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and CBP, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda Requénez prosecuting the case.

The sentencing of Reina-Ruiz serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the importation of narcotics and the consequences for those who engage in such activities.
