HOUSTON – Manuel Albert Aragon-Hernandez, a 39-year-old Mexican national with a seven-felon record, faces 44 months in federal prison after being caught with a firearm while drunk and illegal reentering the United States. The repeat offender’s latest conviction stems from his unlawful return to the country following a felony theft conviction.
Aragon-Hernandez pleaded guilty on July 1 before U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison, who noted that the defendant was already in custody for narcotics offenses since 2023. He is not a U.S. citizen and will face removal proceedings after his prison term.
At a hearing, the court heard evidence that Aragon-Hernandez had fired a weapon while intoxicated after reentering the country. Authorities also found him in possession of narcotics during a traffic stop for speeding, where they discovered methamphetamine and marijuana.
Aragon-Hernandez has prior convictions for failure to identify with intent to give false information, theft from a person, three prior convictions for illegal entry, and two for possession of a controlled substance. He was first removed from the country on September 14, 2010, and returned illegally three times.
“If you illegally reenter the United States after being removed or deported, you are going to be imprisoned and then sent home again,” said U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. “Save yourself the trouble—and the prison time—by just staying home in the first place.”
Aragon-Hernandez will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, with the investigation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Wirsing prosecuted the case. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative focused on combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
