Michael Anthony Spano, Anabolic Steroid Distribution, Alabama 2016

BIRMINGHAM – A shocking case of steroid distribution has shaken the community in Pelham, Alabama. Michael Anthony Spano, a 30-year-old man from Pelham, pleaded guilty to charges related to the distribution of anabolic steroids in Jefferson and Shelby counties.

According to court documents, Spano imported bulk quantities of steroid powder into the United States through the mail and then manufactured injectable and oral steroids at a clandestine lab in his basement in Pelham, Ala. The investigation revealed that Spano was distributing a range of anabolic steroids, including testosterone propionate, trenbolone acetate, nandrolone decanoate, testosterone enanthate, and stanozolol, between May 2013 and May 2016.

The maximum penalty for both distribution charges is 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Spano is scheduled for sentencing on July 27.

U.S. Postal Inspectors and the ALEA State Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Felton is prosecuting. The U.S. Postal Inspectors have vowed to vigorously investigate crimes where the U.S. Mail is used to place the public at risk, citing this case as an example of their efforts to protect the public from the criminal misuse of the U.S. Mail.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge Karon O. Bowdre presided over the guilty plea hearing, where Spano pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess and distribute the anabolic steroids, as well as one count of possessing with intent to distribute those steroids in Shelby County on May 13, 2016.

The investigation into Spano’s steroid distribution operation has raised concerns about the misuse of the U.S. Mail for illicit activities.
