Michael Childers, Falsification of Records, Kentucky 2024

A former USP Big Sandy Lieutenant has been held accountable for his role in violating an inmate’s civil rights in Kentucky.

Michael Childers, 47, of Harold, Kentucky, was sentenced to 17 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Robert Wier for falsification of records, in accordance with a plea agreement.

The sentence was handed down on April 2026, after Childers admitted to writing an incident report that falsely claimed an inmate had assaulted him on April 13, 2021, while the inmate was being brought into the lieutenants’ office for protective custody.

The incident was part of a larger scheme in which several staff members, including Lieutenant Terry Melvin, Lieutenant Kevin Pearce, Case Management Coordinator Samuel Patrick, and Captain’s Secretary Clinton Pauley, participated in the assault of the inmate without justification.

Under federal law, Childers must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release from prison, he will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for one year.

The investigation into the assault was conducted by the DOJ-OIG and the FBI, with the assistance of the Eastern District of Kentucky and the Louisville Field Office.
