Crackdown on Human Traffickers in Vermont
Burlington, Vermont – In a shocking turn of events, a Massachusetts man and an Irish national were arrested in Williamstown, Vermont, for their involvement in a human trafficking scheme.
Michael Doherty, 41, of Quincy, Massachusetts, was charged with transporting Andrew McRedmond, 42, a citizen of Ireland, in furtherance of his illegal entry into the United States. McRedmond was charged with illegally re-entering the United States as an alien and entry into the United States at a time or place other than authorized.
The incident occurred on May 31, 2025, when law enforcement authorities observed a person, wearing a blue hat with white mesh and a backpack, walking south from a wooded area near Golf Course Road in Richford, Vermont. The individual was seen approximately a quarter mile south of the United States/Canada border.
Further investigation revealed that a vehicle driven by Doherty, which had recently crossed the border at the Richford Port of Entry, was also in the vicinity of the person observed in the wooded area. When law enforcement stopped Doherty’s vehicle on Interstate 91 in Williamstown, Vermont, Doherty was driving, and McRedmond was also in the vehicle. Investigators found a blue hat with white mesh on the dashboard matching the description of the person from the wooded area.
In a post-arrest interview, McRedmond admitted to Border Patrol agents that he was in the United States illegally and that he coordinated with Doherty to be picked up near the international border.
The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that the complaints contain allegations only and that Doherty and McRedmond are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Doherty faces up to five years’ imprisonment if convicted, while McRedmond faces up to two years’ incarceration if convicted.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher commended the investigatory efforts of the United States Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
