Shawn Snead, Fentanyl Distribution, Vermont 2024

Burlington, Vermont – A relentless crackdown on drug trafficking has led to the sentencing of Shawn Snead, 33, a St. Johnsbury resident who has been caught distributing deadly fentanyl while under federal supervision.

In a stunning turn of events, Snead was sentenced by United States District Judge William K. Sessions III to a term of 24 months’ imprisonment for his role in the conspiracy to distribute fentanyl within the community of St. Johnsbury. This sentence comes after Snead’s previous conviction in U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont for conspiracy to distribute heroin and cocaine base.

However, this wasn’t the end for Snead. The judge also handed down an additional 12 months’ incarceration for a violation of his supervised release, which must be served consecutively to the initial sentence. Following his time behind bars, Snead will also be subjected to a 3-year term of supervised release.

Court records reveal that Snead’s offense involved multiple controlled purchases of fentanyl in St. Johnsbury. The gravity of his actions is further underscored by the fact that he was on federal supervised release when he committed this crime, having begun his term in July 2022. His return to selling drugs came less than two years after his initial conviction.

Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the collaborative efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the Vermont State Police in bringing Snead to justice.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicole Cate and Michelle Arra, with Snead represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth. This sentencing sends a clear message that those who attempt to distribute deadly drugs on federal supervised release will face severe consequences.
