A 60-year-old Godfrey, Illinois man was hit with a 235-month federal prison sentence for distributing and receiving child pornography. Michael E. Myers, convicted on one count of distribution and one count of receipt, will serve the sentences concurrently, followed by five years of court-supervised release. A federal judge also ordered Myers to pay $2,500 in restitution to a single identified victim, a small price for the irreversible harm caused.
The investigation began April 14, 2016, when the Madison County Sheriff’s Department received a CyberTipline report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The alert flagged an email account tied to Myers, used to send and receive graphic child sexual abuse material. Investigators quickly traced the digital trail, unearthing damning evidence of deliberate, repeated violations.
Court documents reveal Myers sent a video containing child pornography to another individual on March 24, 2016, via email. Five days later, on March 29, he received and viewed a second video—also depicting the sexual exploitation of a child—through the same account. Each click, each transmission, deepened the crime and tightened the net around him.
The case was investigated by detectives with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, who worked to follow forensic leads and secure digital evidence. Their work laid the foundation for federal prosecution under the Southern District of Illinois, led by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Hoell, who pushed for accountability in a case defined by predation and secrecy.
This prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat the explosion of online child sexual exploitation. By uniting federal, state, and local agencies, the program targets those who produce, distribute, and consume child pornography—while striving to rescue the children trapped in the images.
Michael E. Myers now begins a nearly two-decade prison term, but the scars left on victims won’t fade with his sentence. The case stands as a grim reminder: digital footprints don’t disappear, and predators who believe they’re hidden in plain sight are already on the Justice Department’s radar.
