Michael James Grommet, Ice Methamphetamine Conspiracy, Illinois 2022

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A Marshalltown, Iowa, man, Michael James Grommet, has been sentenced to thirty years in federal prison for his role in a massive ice methamphetamine distribution ring in Illinois and Iowa.

On March 9, 2022, Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow handed down the 360-month sentence, to be followed by five years of supervised release, for Grommet’s conviction on conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 50 grams of actual methamphetamine.

The government established that Grommet worked with associates to distribute over seven kilograms of ice methamphetamine in both Illinois and Iowa, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Darrow described the ‘extreme physical and mental destruction’ that methamphetamine has on the community, stating that Grommet posed ‘the most severe risk to recidivate’ she had seen ‘in a long time’ with ‘absolutely no regard for other individuals.’

Grommet was convicted following a jury trial in August 2021, after the government detailed his extensive criminal history, which included over twenty criminal convictions.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyssa Raya, ‘As the Court made clear, individuals who make a career out of trafficking highly-addictive, community-devastating drugs will be held accountable.’

The case investigation was conducted by the Rock Island Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force and the Bremer County, Iowa, Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Raya and Jennifer Mathew represented the government in the prosecution.
