Michael Keith Rubino, a 37-year-old man from Vacaville, California, has pleaded guilty to a heinous crime that has left his community in shock. Rubino admitted to engaging in sexually explicit conduct with a 17-year-old girl who resided with him for approximately six weeks in late 2024.
According to court documents, Rubino used his iPhone to record a video of himself committing the crime. The victim was later admitted to a local hospital, and Rubino lied to law enforcement officers, claiming he never engaged in sexual conduct with her. However, the evidence revealed the truth, and Rubino was subsequently arrested and charged.
This case is the product of an investigation by the Vacaville Police Department, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sam Stefanki is prosecuting the case, which is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. government to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Rubino is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley on November 11, 2025. He faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison and a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, as well as a $250,000 fine.
The actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child sexual exploitation and the importance of continued efforts to combat this epidemic.
Rubino’s guilty plea is a significant step in bringing justice to his victim and holding him accountable for his actions. However, the true impact of this case will only be felt when Rubino is held accountable for his crimes and receives a sentence that reflects the severity of his actions.
The people of Vacaville and the surrounding communities can rest a little easier knowing that Rubino will face the consequences of his actions. However, this case also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for continued awareness and education about child sexual exploitation.
