Camp Counselor Charged in Child Exploitation Case

A former camp counselor has been arrested and charged with sexually exploiting a minor, federal authorities announced Thursday.

Michael Bryant Marin, 18, of Port Chester, New York, is accused of using social media to communicate with a 13-year-old girl in New Mexico and convincing her to send him sexually explicit photos and videos, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Marin allegedly posed as a minor and threatened to post the girl’s photos and videos on social media sites if she didn’t comply with his demands, the complaint states. He also demanded that she act as his ‘slave’ and perform a number of sexually explicit acts, including bestiality with a pet cat and taking nude photos in her school bathroom.

The victim’s parents reported the allegations to authorities in March 2016, and Marin was arrested earlier this week. He is currently employed as a camp counselor in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Marin is charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, which carries a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, authorities said.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Santa Fe City Police Department in connection with the investigation, which is ongoing.

FBI Assistant Director Diego Rodriguez urged parents to talk to their children about online safety and to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
